Driver, 25, is identified after seven people killed in fiery tour van crash in Yellowstone National Park

The deadly two-vehicle crash near Yellowstone national park resulted in the deaths of at least seven people and injured eight.

Flames engulfed the crashed Mercedes tour van and Dodge Ram red pickup truck on US Highway 20 at around 7.15pm on Thursday evening.

Emergency services responded to the scene just 16 miles west of the national park, near Henrys Lake state park in eastern Idaho.

As smoke billowed from the wreckage, passing travellers stopped to help out. Two bystanders pulled eight of the fourteen people in the tour van from the wreckage before the vehicle set ablaze.

One man travelling on the highway, Roger Merrill, 60, filmed the scene and recalled to Associated Press the horror he witnessed.

He told the outlet he often saw tourist vans travel on the roadway leading to the national park and described it as 'a very dangerous highway because it leads to the main entrance of Yellowstone National Park.'

'It's extremely busy,' he said, as he was concerned that the scene's remote location would keep emergency services from responding in time.

'It took an unnervingly long time for help to arrive just because of the location,' he said.

Merrill videoed the scene as flames whipped in the wind and smoke poured from the fire.

Following the crash, two people were witnessed pulling 'as many as they could' from the wreck. The pair successfully rescued eight people, including a child, before the van erupted into flames.

A police spokesman, Aaron Snell, told The Detroit News that the surviving occupants were taken to hospital for their injuries.

One of the seven victims was identified as Isaiah Moreno, 25, who had been driving the tour van.

The other six victims were left unrecognizable, requiring DNA testing to identify them, Fremont County Coroner Brenda Dye told the New York Times.

All six tourists who perished were travelling from outside of the United States, Dye said. Four have yet to be identified, but two were determined to have been visiting from Italy.

The tour group had been visiting Yellowstone, Dye said.

Highway 20 was closed from both directions until 2am on Friday as emergency crews accessed the scene.

The highway was identified by the Idaho Transportation Department as in need of safety improvement ahead of the crash. The project is in its early stages.

An average of 10,500 vehicles travelled on the roadway in 2023, according to the agency.

Idaho State Police are leading the ongoing investigation into the cause of the crash.

Police were still attempting to contact family members of those who were killed or injured, and the identities of the remaining deceased is yet to be released.

The Idaho transportation department identified U.S.Highway 20 for safety improvments ahead of the horrific crash. The project is currently in early stages.

The highway had an average of 10,500 vehicles travelling on it in 2023, reported the agency.

All six victims were visiting from outside of the US, coroner Brenda Dye told the outlet.

It remains unclear where four of those who died were visiting from, Dye said, but two victims were determined to have been visiting from Italy.

The group had been touring Yellowstone, she added.

Following the deadly crash, two others on the highway jumped from their vehicles and attempted to pull people from the fiery wreck.

She said they were 'trying to pull out as many as they could' from the wreck, and succesfully helped eight people from the van, including a child, before it burst into flames.

He was able to capture the scene in a video which showed the billowing smoke rise from the fire-coated crash scene.

Merrill told the outlet he often saw tourist vans on the highway leading to the national park, and was concerned about emergency response times due to its remote location.
